When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in early 2002, my options seemed very limited. Because I had previously been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, standard radiation did not seem to be a good solution. Further, because my prostate was so large, conventional seeding was not possible. Removal of the prostate gland was an option, of course, but there was concern about my urinary function after such an operation.
My doctor suggested that I might check into a new procedure being performed in Vienna, Virginia by Dr. Panos Koutrouvelis. Dr. Koutrouvelis had developed a new system of seeding that could be effective on very large prostates. We consulted with Dr. Koutrouvelis and decided to undergo the procedure.
It has been highly successful. Not only is my cancer apparently gone, but also my colon was not adversely affected. My PSA had dropped significantly (< 0.1 ng/mL), and the size of my prostate has shrunk. In addition, we have found Dr. Koutrouvelis and his staff delightful to work with. My wife and I are happy that we had this option.

At 54 years of age, my doctors in Australia gave me a few months to live with advanced, incurable prostate cancer. (PSA 16, T4, N1, G7). I had TURP surgery to unblock my urethra followed by hormone therapy.
A few months later, still alive and kicking, I found the URPI website. A couple of emails to Dr K, and I was on the plane to Washington. Three years since the brachytherapy, my PSA is 0.05, I receive no treatment or medication, and do a half-triathlon each day before breakfast.
Thanks for my life back.

There must be men, just like me, scared to death by the 'C'; word and told by their urologists that the only options available are radical surgery or external radiation...You have pioneered this procedure and millions of other men like me will benefit from it, without all those nasty side effects like incontinence and impotency. Please give our heartfelt thanks to all of your staff.

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer with seminal vesicle invasion, Gleason's score 8 (aggressive cancer). I got pretty interested in treatment options for prostate cancer. Being a scientist by education and experience equipped me to evaluated the various methodologies out there for the treatment of prostate cancer. Almost universally doctors are using ultrasound-guidance to place needles in the transperineal area (a very sensitive area). Dr. Koutrouvelis places the needles through the backside (less sensitivity). It was clear that with CT-guidance he could more accurately place the needles. Dr. Koutrouvelis' procedure was clearly superior because he can see where the needles are placed. Accuracy of placement and minimal impact on my body— That convinced me!
